THE VIRTUAL BEANSTALK PROJECT
Polyamide fibers
such as Spectra, (TM), make it possible to walk into a marine supply
store and purchase a double-braided rope which is light enough and
strong enough
to tether a large hydrogen balloon array above the troposphere.
Manned
solar-electric elevators could
climb that tether to a habitation cylinder and platform
floating 20 km high in a mere 50 millibars of air pressure.
Above 95% of earth's air, that affordable near-space station
would be the world's premier tourist destination.
Uses
for a near-space beanstalk:
- Adventure Tourism
- Orbital rocket
Launcher
- Science Laboratories
- Missile Base
- Telecom
Tower
- Radar Station
The
beanstalk can only be located near the equator where there are no
strong jetstream winds to blow against the tether and drag it down.
It
is possible for amateurs to design, develop and sell this concept over
the internet.
